StarPower: The Hardest-Working Truck In Tow Business. The 2010 Ram Heavy Duty is the first to market, and it's already ahead of the game.

Despite the effects of the Great Recession on personal-use truck sales, there is still demand for pickups ready to do hard work. The heavy-duty truck market has gotten smaller, but the guys who buy those pickups are fiercely loyal to the segment-they need the extreme capability these hard-working haulers provide. Some may wonder why anyone would own a truck that can tow nearly 20,000 pounds, but for a lot of people in construction, those who transport vehicles or goods, and those with ranches, this is just a part of everyday life.

A Ranch Truck With Cummins Power And Super Duty Durability

You've heard people say it a hundred times: The Cummins B-series diesel is the ultimate engine-it just needs to be in a better truck. Well, that's exactly what Andrew McGibbon thought, and it's why he decided to repower a brand-new Ford Super Duty.

A 900HP First-Gen Built To Run With The Competition

With so many pulling trucks out there these days, we always jump at the chance to check out a unique, old-school ride that's been purpose-built. This couldn't be more true for first-gen Dodges, and Mark Burress' '93 W250 was on our radar from the moment we saw it back in 2008. "It definitely would've been easier to just start with a second-generation truck, but you just don't see too many good-looking, old Dodges that run well," he told us.

Water-Methanol Injection System For Ford 6.9L IDI

Back in February 2009, we rescued this '87 Ford F-250 from a one-way trip to the junkyard. We got its 6.9L IDI diesel engine, ZF five-speed transmission, and twin I-beam, two-wheel-drive suspension resurrected with the items listed on the next page. This month we've modified the ATS-turbocharged engine with a Snow Performance Diesel Stage 3 MPG-MAX water-methanol injection system.

How To Make The VT365 Go The Distance

In the May '10 issue we showed you how to put a 7.3L Power Stroke together from the ground up and explained many of the tips and tricks involved in rebuilding one (including a forged connecting rod upgrade). This time, we're back to show you how to resurrect the 7.3L's successor, the 6.0L Power Stroke, using more genuine (and affordable) Ford parts.

Duramax Domination

It can be a real chore covering the newest model truck a manufacturer offers when its key changes include nothing more than different body panels, fenders, and interior upgrades. Cosmetic changes are easily the last item on our totem pole-which is why we were ecstatic to join General Motors on its first drive of the completely redesigned '11 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD pickups in June.

When Ford (in conjunction with International) converted the 7.3L IDI engine from mechanical to the hydraulically actuated electronically controlled unit injection (HEUI) system, the Power Stroke brand was created. The 7.3L Power Stroke was the first electronically controlled, direct-injected diesel engine in the light-duty market segment.

Waste Heat Recovery, More Power, And Fewer Emissions

The VanDyne SuperTurbocharger system combines the best features from three different types of forced induction. This easily mass-produced product is able to change an engine into a hybrid without complicated electronics and heavy batteries. Basically, a turbocharger is connected to a CVT transmission and the engine itself. The U.S. Army recently awarded VanDyne with an innovative research grant to demonstrate its system's benefits, because efficiency gains and clear exhaust reduces cost and saves lives on the battlefield. According to the company, this device only costs $350 per vehicle (in high-volume production) and increases the power of a turbocharged diesel engine 7 to 10 percent. Also, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced 7 percent.
