Misconceptions Of Synthetic Motor Oil

Author: Vincent Platania

Synthetic motor oil has been around for about four decades now and becomes more popular as time goes on.  Although more and more vehicle owners have switched to using synthetic motor oil, many people still do not understand the value in it's use.  Because it is slightly more expensive than traditional, petroleum based oils, some people will not even take the time to learn why it may be a better alternative.  There are many misconceptions about synthetic motor oil and it's abilities.

One common misconception about synthetic motor oil is that it is no different than traditional oil at all, but just a ploy to charge more for a completely similar product.  The truth is that synthetic motor oil is very different than the traditional, petroleum based oils.  It is chemically engineered by scientists to have a more consistent molecular size and structure than traditional oils.  Petroleum based oils are refined from crude oil where contaminants and unstable hydrocarbons can slip past in the refining process.  Synthetic oil was created in a laboratory to have a uniform consistency and can be designed better for a specific application.  This also means that synthetic motor oil will flow better than its predecessor and lubricate internal engine parts more evenly.  Synthetic motor oil will also hold up better in extreme temperatures, take much longer to break down, and leave behind far less byproducts.

Other misconceptions about synthetic motor oil suggest it can not be used for older vehicles, especially if those vehicles have always used the conventional, petroleum based oils of the past.  This claim is based on the idea that synthetic motor oils, with their tiny, uniform molecules will leak past the older seals faster and cause other problems due to the different types of materials used to make these seals in the past.  Another is that the detergents in synthetic motor oil will corrode the older seals and rubber hoses of an aged vehicle.  In this case, the opposite is in fact true.  The detergents and additives in synthetic oils will clean filters, hoses, and lines causing an older vehicle to perform even better.

It is clear that some people still don't understand the differences between synthetic motor oil and conventional, petroleum based oils.  The advantages of the newer synthetic and synthetic blends can be seen in longer lasting vehicles, greater fuel economy, and greater engine performance.  If there is any questions concerning which type of oil one should use in their vehicle, some simple research will show that synthetic motor oil is superior to it's predecessor, the traditional, petroleum based oils of the past.
